Description
This is a quite scarce, silver
"12 Skilling Danske"
from the Duchy of
"Holstein-Gottorp-Rendsborg"
in the Kingdom of Denmark
. It was struck at the Rendsborg mint in 1716 during the reign of King Frederick IV. He was King from 1699 until his death in 1730.
The city of Rendsborg in the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp-Rendsborg was located where Schleswig-Holstein meet. Schleswig and Holstein have at different times belonged in part or completely to either Denmark, the Holy Roman Empire, or been virtually independent of both nations.
Denmark and Frederick IV here were deeply involved in the
"Great Northern War"
in 1716. It had begun in 1700 and would end in 1721. Russia under Peter

, Saxony-Poland-Lithuania under Augustus II
"The Strong"
and Denmark-Norway under Frederick here, fought and eventually defeated Sweden, led by King Charles XII.

XII • SKILLING • DANSKE • 1716 • B • H • Mark used by the Mintmaster of the Rendsborg mint, Hans Schierven Knoph who served from 1716 until 1720. • Crowned arms.
The Coin:
A worker, it served as a medium of a lot of exchanges. It earned substantial, but honest wear and its share of marks. Like most old silver coins, it has been cleaned at some time. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
