This listing is for a very collectible Sterling Silver Vintage Frank M Whiting “Citation” and “Armed” coasters. The original drawing was by Sam Savitt for Delano Studios. The coaster was reproduced for Frank M Whiting. The background of the coaster is a creamy white. The china plate is surrounded by a beautiful sterling silver rim with decorative braided edging. The back of the coaster bears the mark Frank M. Whiting & Co. Sterling. Citation is a beautiful brown horse with light and dark shades of brown reflecting the light and emphasizing the muscle and strength of this powerful horse. "Citation" is the star of the Coaster shown at a trot with two front feet off the ground. This wonderful horse is what horse legends are made of. Citation, a Bay Horse, was foaled 4-11-45 by Bull Lea Out of Hydroplane 2nd. The breeder is the renowned Calumet Farm. Citation won the Triple Crown in 1948. The Triple Crown Winner must win the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and Belmont. This magnificent horse won 27 races out of 29 starts. The original painting by Sam Savitt is hand colored for Frank M Whiting. The drawing was hand applied on china. The coaster is in very good condition. There is a small mark above Citation where it appears that the glaze did not cover the china. There is age appropriate scratching on the rim of the coaster with three pin pricks that do not pierce the silver rim. There is also a cloud like marking (in front of Citation) that is under the glaze that is quite common on the Triple Crown winner coasters. It does not detract from the beauty of this magnificent collectible piece and is mentioned for listing accuracy. An amazing piece of history in incredible condition for its age. I estimate that the coaster was produced in the 1940s. Please view the photos as they are an important part of the description. The approximate measurement of the coaster is 4 1/4" from rim to rim.
Armed Coaster is cracked but intact.
